Introduction and Mission

My name is Matthew Heap and I am a composer and theorist living in Morgantown, WV, and teaching composition and theory at the University of West Virginia. My work and experience in those fields spans several genres and I am proficient in other areas such as performance, conducting, and music history. I was born and lived in England during my formative years, and returned to the Royal College of Music, in London to do graduate work. I believe this transatlantic education gives me different perspectives on how people learn, discuss, and teach music.

The mission of this blog is to give a window into the way I view new music. I plan to write about what I'm composing at the moment, complete with sketches and commentary, analysis of previous works, and thoughts about the works of others. I hope that by doing this, I will introduce different composers and their works to my readers, and give a window into the way that I work. Please comment on all of these - I welcome feedback on my composition, and I hope to have lively discussions about all of these works.
