An Infinite Shade of Lilac

Title: An Infinite Shade of Lilac

Instruments: 2 flutes, piano

Program Notes:

An Infinite Shade of Lilac derives its color from three distinct sources that are woven together over the course of the piece. The first source is the multiple timbres that can be made with the flute (including air noises, singing and playing, and tongue pizzicato). The second is a section that uses chromatic techniques to evoke an exotic, faraway sound. The third is the C overtone series. At times these sources conflict to give the piece forward momentum, but by the end, they join together to leave the barest hint of lilac in the air.
