Instrumentation:  Flute, Clarinet, Horn, Bassoon, Soprano Sax, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Baritone Sax, Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Cello, Percussion 1, Percussion 2

Notes:

Herr Nun Lass in Friede is at heart a statement for peace.  It is built around the chorale melody (and Bach harmonization) of the same name.  The piece derives direction from the struggle between the loud instruments (symbolizing war) – the saxophones and percussion; and the soft instruments (symbolizing peace) – the winds.  The strings take on the part of ‘public opinion’ – swayed by whoever is more convincing.  The piece ends with a full statement of the Bach harmonization of the chorale – a cry for peace – but leaves the listener uncertain as to the lasting nature of that peace.
