Divergent Impulses

Instruments: Double concerto for Violin and Viola, with Flute, Clarinet in Bb, Violin, Viola, Cello, Piano, Percussion

Program Notes:

Divergent Impulses is a piece that uses the overtone series as the foundational material. The two impulses are the low G of the violin, and the low C of the viola, and each instrument sticks to the notes prescribed by the overtone series of their respective note. The piece begins with a stately introduction to those notes, but the solo violin and viola quickly fall to the musical equivalent of bickering. The other instruments pick sides, and the conflict intensifies until the entire system breaks down. By the end, an agreement is formed which ordains a third overtone series (based on E) as the primary material.  This piece was written as part of the “Commissioned Project” for Duo Scordatura

First Performed: 2014, Duo Scordatura (upcoming)
